My Happy Place

My sewing room looks a little chaotic but represents four decades of collecting things I love. Over the years I have acquired multiple sewing machines, sergers, cover stitchers, quilting machines, cutting machines, you name it. Love the technology and love the color and texture of creating things with fiber.

Whenever I feel a little guilty about having such an amazing space, my daughter reminds me of all the years/decades I stored things in boxes and worked from a corner of the dining room table.

When my kids were young I sewed a lot of their clothes, not because I needed to do it, but because I loved embellishing, choosing colors, and finding options that were cute and cozy, but were also really comfortable for littles on the go. One of my earliest memories of sewing for my kids is working on a darling jumper-style dress for my daughter, with a hand-stitched bunny applique on the skirt. She was three or four years old, and I foolishly left the jumper, applique thread, and embroidery scissors within her reach when I went to check on her baby brother. When I returned, she had cut through the hem and the applique to 'fix' it for me. We decided to adapt the applique and come up with a bunny scene that allowed me to patch the damaged areas and she loved it. Pretty much anything can be salvaged if you are determined to do it!

Here is my 'she shed' in all its messy, fabulous glory.
