And amn't I always? Here is a project done years ago intended for an online auction that has yet to occur.
PCD stands for 'primary ciliary dyskinesia,' an inherited disorder that leads to lung, ear and sinus infections, infertility and other problems. At least half of the children born with PCD have congenital birth defects affecting the placement or development of their internal organs. The most common problem is known as 'situs inversus,' which is the mirror-image placement of all internal organs. They are flipped so that the heart and other organs are on the opposite side of where they normally would be found. Situs ambiguus ('ambiguous' aka 'heterotaxy') is also seen, where organ development/placement is random and sometimes serious defects, including congenital heart defects are seen.
To represent all forms of PCD, I sewed up three stuffed bunnies using Simplicity 9524 and appliqued hearts on their chests: one in the normal position on the left side of the chest, one in mirror-image position on the right, and one with a repaired 'broken' heart.
Super simple pattern! I used chenille and stuffed with poly fiberfill so that the toys would be washable--always important when you want to avoid spreading germs. The eyes and noses were purchased because I wanted safety snap-on versions. The mouths are hand embroidered and the bows tacked in place.
